Veteran Transition Program
Project Overview
Baxter Safe Homes is dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk veterans in the Greater Richmond area secure stable, rewarding careers in the construction industry. Founded by a former service member who understands the challenges veterans face, our program combines hands-on job training with personalized support services, ensuring that participants gain both practical work experience and a pathway to long-term housing and financial stability.
Key Program Elements
On-the-Job Training
Veterans participate in real construction projects—such as residential remodels, deck building, and additions—under the guidance of experienced site supervisors. This immersive approach lets participants build marketable skills while earning a partial wage subsidy to reduce immediate financial stress.Certifications & Career Advancement
Participants have the opportunity to earn recognized trade certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30) that significantly improve their employability and open doors for career growth.Holistic Support Services
Each participant has access to a dedicated case manager and life coach. From securing transportation and addressing housing needs to developing personal resilience and budgeting skills, we ensure that no obstacle stands in the way of success.Job Placement & Follow-Up
We work closely with local employers, unions, and trade associations to help veterans transition into stable employment. Once hired, participants receive ongoing check-ins to address workplace challenges and support long-term job retention.
Why It Matters
Many veterans exiting homelessness struggle to find lasting career opportunities. By weaving together job training, certification, and personal development, Baxter Safe Homes empowers them to regain financial independence, secure permanent housing, and sustain meaningful careers in construction.
